Viva La Mexico: My first trip out of the U.S.

Back in November my friend and I contemplated a trip to Mexico. We spoke about dates and where we would want to go and how much fun it would be, however, everything was totally hypothetical. 6 hours later the trip wasn’t so hypothetical anymore. My best friend booked us a Spring Break trip to Cancun. (Get you a friend like her.)

While I may have a passport most of my trips have been within the U.S. or to Antigua (my mother’s home country). So this was my first trip out of the U.S. but also my first trip without the parentals (if we don’t count all the spring breaks before this). I was literally beaming with excitement!

In the blink of an eye, my friend booked everything we needed for an amazing experience in Mexico. (She’s the human version of Expedia…Love you, Tammy!)

To be as thrifty as possible we booked our flights to leave from New Jersey. So here I am in the airport preparing to fly solo for the first time with a pretty good airline for a pretty decent price. It couldn’t get any better… but it did. The app we used didn’t let us pick our seats so we were surprised with first class tickets … Come thru Hopper. First time flying solo, first class tickets I’m definitely living, right? Of course not… the crew made sure we were set, offering us drinks and whole meals for our flight. So here you have me: first class and wine drunk at 5 in the morning… my life is officially lived.

We stayed at the Live Aqua Resort in Cancun; A top tier hotel, second best in the area, and 18+ so no crying kids. For an insanely cheap price, we got great rooms with a view, 24-hour room service, unlimited drinks, a spa, gym, and an abundance of pools and restaurants connected to the hotel. From the moment I got to the hotel up until right before I left I had a drink in hand. Did I just find my personal heaven? When my nail broke the woman in the nail salon happily fixed it free of charge, and they all put up with our need to have new unopened bottles of water. The customer service here was beyond amazing. (If this is what heaven looks like I promise I’ll be good.)

Being as touristy as we could possibly get, we visited a number of places; Chichen Itza, Hubiku Cenote, etc. We also did a tequila tour which gives American tequila a run for its money. No seriously, why were we ever drinking tequila from anywhere else? I left with the cutest coconut flavored tequila which tastes a lot like coquito but HITSSSSS.

This is the amazing coconut tequila

We also experienced a cave with a beautiful lake that pretty much made the whole trip what it was. Before taking a dip you had to shower in order to keep the water clean which is an idea we definitely need to adopt out here. There was a hole like entrance where light could shine through and honestly it was just beautiful. The clear water, the shaman, the smell; if burning sage was a place it would be this!

The Cenote located in Hubiku that literally blew our minds.

Please take me back I miss seeing water this clear… I’m definitely over NYC beach water and it’s dirty gray color.

Adìos Mexico mi amor. Till next time!

That is so awesome! I visited Mexico thrice for work but never ended up making it to Cancun, not for the lack of trying though! Trips with friends are the best. Glad you had such an awesome time there.

Where have you visited? I love Cancun but it was definitely really touristy I preferred Hubiku you really felt the culture. If you stay in Cancun Live Aqua is such a great resort it makes you never want to leave
